To be a good listener you simply have to listen, and take notes - whether mental or actual - but to be an excellent listener, you need to SHOW that you're listening, or that you have listened.

You can be a good - or excellent - listener:

1. while somebody is speaking to you
2. after somebody has spoken to you
3. while reading something
4. after reading something

1. WHILE SOMEBODY IS SPEAKING TO YOU

- Give them your undivided attention; try and avoid distractions - if the meeting was planned, arrange for no distractions in advance

- Without actually interrupting their flow, give a very short little burst of laughter (if appropriate) or make little sounds or utter words or short phrases:

Really?
Gosh!
I see.
Wow.
I'm sorry.
Uh-huh.
No way!
Please repeat that.

- Facial expressions and head movements:

- Nod, shake your head, frown, smile,
- Use just your face to express amazement, shock, pity, concern

Be on the look out for pauses while the person speaks to you. If it's clear they're not yet done speaking, encourage them to continue by asking a question - even just "And?" or simply say "Continue."

2. AFTER SOMEBODY HAS SPOKEN TO YOU

Try not to assume that they are really done speaking. Ask questions and encourage them to continue speaking. If they've asked questions, answer the questions and then ask if they have any more questions, or, after you've spoken a bit, ask them "What are your thoughts?"

Focus on them: don't tell your own story unless they asked you to - rather speak about what they've just said - express how you feel about what they've just said, offer your opinion or advice

3. WHILE READING SOMETHING

- Avoid distractions
- Re-read if you lose focus or don't understand something the first time round
- Take notes

4. AFTER READING SOMETHING

- Write something that others will see, that shows them what you have learned

- Write a question, that the writer of what you just read might see, to show that you're interested and would like to know more

- Take action - if what you read were instructions or tips, do the actions that show that you are following those instructions or using those tips

While we can send more team mails than just one a week, I like it that it is only once a week that we can earn 30 VersaPoints for sending a group team mail. This is an immediate encouragement not to overload a new affiliate with information.

What I like to do is:

1. Send a welcome ecard as soon as possible after I've been notified I have a new affiliate on my team, whether a PSA or CSA. My ecard message includes a warm welcome and some basic tips for getting started.

2. Then I like to leave the new affiliate alone for a few days (other than if they ask me questions - then I reply as quickly as possible). I leave them alone because I hope they are reading and learning, and also because I know that they are also getting emails from SFI.

3. After a few days I check their VP Ledgers, and I note what it is they've been scoring VersaPoints for. If it looks like they haven't been putting in much effort, or no effort at all, I usually just leave them alone to get on with doing nothing much, unsure of what their reasons may be. It is enough that they get emails from SFI and from me at least once a week. Should they start to put in some effort though, I do the same for them that I do with those who are putting in some effort right from the start:

4. I set up a small challenge for those who seem to be putting in some effort. After studying their VP Ledger I give them a short list of things I want to see done usually over a 3 day period. If they successfully complete the challenge, I reassign two or more of my new affiliates to them.

5. Beyond that, I continue to monitor their VP Ledgers, and give guidance, in small bites, related to a specific area of their VP Ledger.

If you could see a stranger standing outside your front door, who doesn't even knock at the door but just stands there, you're not going to open the door, welcome them in, and give them tea and cookies, are you?

Okay, so you might open the door just a crack if there's also a security gate at your front door, or you may call through a slightly open window "What do you want?" or "Who are you looking for?"

But you're not going to welcome them into your home and give them tea and cookies.

Unless of course when they start speaking to you you realize that they're actually a friend you haven't seen in ages, or a relative you last saw when you were still climbing trees and scraping knees. Then of course you'd welcome them in and give them tea and cookies, or something stronger than tea or more decadent than cookies.

I don't believe in giving gifts to strangers who may appear on my premises - unless I realize that they're not strangers after all.

It is the same for me with SFI. A quick hello and non-overwhelming welcome letter suffices. This is followed by my "checking-up" on them, and possibly an incentive from me for them to become "more friendly" - and then only do they get their welcome gift - usually some reassignments. I like getting new affiliates, and it's said that one should give others what one would like to receive oneself. I'm not only giving them what I like to receive myself, but am also giving them the opportunity to experience what I just did - dealing with the new "strangers at my front door". How they handle the "strangers" will determine the strength of the "neighborhood".

There are other ways to get Personally Sponsored Affiliates and TripleClicks members besides through S-Builder Co-op units.

Nothing other than TCredits can be used as follows:
- to bid on auctions
- to play games (although EZ Tokens may sometimes be used too)
- to list an item for sale
- to download a song
- to earn 1VP for use of each one on a game or auction
- to earn 5 MRP or 10 MRP for use of each one

That said, however, which of the two is the better investment?

A good investment is something that not only delivers a good financial return on investment, but that also saves one time.

Also,

- if two investments saved one the same amount of time and made one the same amount of money, the better investment would be the one that costs less.

With investments, there is often risk to consider too.

S-BUILDER CO-OP UNITS

5 S-Builder Co-op units will currently cost one $120.
This will give one 25 MRP and 1400 Sales VersaPoints.

What else does purchasing 5 S-Builder Co-op units do for one?
- eliminates or reduces the amount of time one needs to spend on marketing for new PSAs and PRMs
- eliminates or reduces the amount of (other) money one needs to spend on marketing for new PSAs and PRMs
- may likely generate about 15 to 45 PSAs and PRMs (total)
- indirectly provides an earnings potential - AVPs, SVPs and money
- may, however, result in very few or even no ACTIVE PSAs or PRMs (risk)

T-CREDITS

Perhaps spent like this:
1 x 200 pack
2 x 50 pack
1 x 20 pack
1 x 10 pack
(currently costs $121.70)

This will give one 64 MRP and 3651 Sales VersaPoints - this is more than double the Sales VersaPoints for spending roughly the same amount of money on S-Builder Co-op units - BUT, of course, we don't have PSAs or PRMs - yet....

But what do we have (besides the 64 MRP and 3651 SVP)?

We have 330 TCredits. And what can we do with these 330 TCredits? We can:

- spend them all on Double MRP Auctions - and earn 3300 MRP for that
- spend them on auctions or games and earn at least 331 AVP for that
- (risk) try to win an auction - perhaps where the item is S-Builder Co-ops or PSAs or CSAs or TCredits
- (risk) try win prizes in games or in the Daily Crown - perhaps more MRP and TCredits
- (risk) try win TCredits in the TCredit flash drawings in auctions
- use the TCredits purchased (or extra TCredits possibly won from spending the TCredits) as well as use the MRP one earns for spending the TCredits, to purchase whatever one wants to - perhaps an S-Builder Co-op or two, some PSAs To Go, or more TCredits
- spend 300 TCredits on auctions and get to spin the Bid & Build 30 times - resulting in anything from 3 to 30 PSAs

"What's a better investment and why? TCredits or S-Builder Co-op?"

I want both TCredits and PSAs, so my choice is TCredits. Why? Besides getting more SVP for purchasing the TCredits, it is also easier to create a way to get PSAs by purchasing and using TCredits (and/or by using extra TCredits and MRP one earns or wins from using the TCredits) than it is to create a way to get TCredits by purchasing S-Builder Co-op units.

I'm working at creating a residual income from SFI - so that in the future I can spend less time working hard at SFI, or, in particular, at the marketing of SFI. If I succeed with this, it will allow me more time to nicely support my affiliates, and to simply have fun at SFI.

Marketing is of the utmost importance with any business. One can have the most amazing product, service, or website, but if not many people know about the existence of that product, service or website, or the benefits of having that product, ordering that service or visiting that website, not much money will be made from it.

My ultimate goal is to have high traffic websites, with the traffic coming from set-and-forget advertising techniques, like good on-site Search Engine Optimization.

I stress the importance of reading, learning, and doing.

If my new PSAs read, learn, and do, they're going to earn.

I want to "work with the workers" and although I am happy to give everyone a chance, and am happy to support all my affiliates, I start somewhat of an elimination process immediately.

I throw them in at the deep end of the reading pool. "Swim or sink," I think to myself. "If you're not prepared to read, learn and do, you're not going to make the income that you hope to make - here or anywhere else."

How do I throw my PSAs in at the deep end? My welcome letter is quite long. My new PSAs will read, or won't read, right there.

In addition to my welcome letter being quite long, I also include links to several pages - more than 6. I encourage my new PSAs to read those pages. Three of the more than 6 pages that I link to are: the Glossary page, the Earnings Calculator page, and my team Leadership page.

It's not all doom and gloom, my welcome letter - I let my PSAs know that they should be excited that they've found an amazing opportunity to make money, and that if they read, learn, and do, they will earn. Just how much money they make, is up to them.

I also let my PSAs know that they don't need to purchase anything to start earning, as long as they read, learn, and do.

I let them know that I'm available to answer any questions they may have.

EXAMPLES:

10 Ways for Preparing to Be Effective When Doing One on One Recruiting

Main aim (ahead of giving the now interested person a card or flyer that contains your referral link): To be confident that you'll be able to easily answer any question that you are asked.

1. Plan what your first words or sentences will be, write them down, learn them, and then say them out loud to yourself, to the mirror, or to a pet.

2. Practice makes perfect - practice with family members and friends, not to recruit them, but simply to practice, as if you were still at school and saying a school oral for your parents the night before you have to say it at school.

3. Have your family members and friends ask you questions, anything that they can think of. Write down those questions.

4. Formulate your answers to those questions, or go do the research to come up with the answers, write the answers down, and then practice giving those answers out loud, on your own.

5. Add more questions to your list. Compile these extra questions after having read several pages on SFI to find suitable ones - read some questions in the Getting Started section of the SFI Forum, in the various categories beneath the SFI heading on the lower left of the SFI Support page, or read the answers to the questions that come up when you start typing in just a few letters or words in the search bar at top right of the site.

6. Practice giving answers to these new questions too, on your own.

7. When you feel you have practiced enough, practice even more. Give the list of questions to family members or friends and have them ask you the questions. Answer the questions.

8. Dress attractively to help boost your self-confidence, or wear an SFI T-Shirt, or clothes, jewelry and accessories that you bought from ECAs at TripleClicks.

9. Pack SFI business cards and flyers.

10. As you go out, heading for your first potential recruit of the day, remind yourself that you have practiced what you're going to say. You know what you're going to say. You are confident. You are a super star. Now go get 'em!
