Has anyone tried the paid Facebook advertising and, if so, did it work/was it was worth the cost?

Yes, I tried the facebook advertising. I received a free coupon for $50.00 and used that coupon. Before advertising on Facebook, I made a second business page so that those joining will see that page. The page I used was for Triple Clicks items. Ninety people joined this Facebook page, but none of them purchased from TC after joining the page.
Do you need to have your own website (if so, why) or are the Gateway websites provided by SFI adequate?

The Gateways are plenty adequate, but you have to advertise them. If you have your own website or blog, you have to advertise it too. Therefore your own website can cost you more money and time.
There are several blog sources on the web such as wordpress, blogger, and squidoo that you can set up and maintain that are free. The cost for these is extra time in setting up and maintaining them.
To save time and effort, you can use your weekly newsletter on your blog or website. This will give you added exposure.
In deciding whether to have a website or just use SFI gateways, you must assess how much time , money and effort you have to spend on the extra program and then evaluate whether it is of value to you.
Often after looking at all that is required to have your own website, you might find it more profitable to spend that time working with SFI materials, social media and building re-pore with your downline.

Any standing order for the month gives you 100 VP to start simply for having the order.
IAHBE is great for new people and to purchase every so often when you have time and desire to study and learn more. This is $29.00 for 1500VP.
Tcredits -100 pak is $29.00 for 1200 VP, and combined with Sbuilder for $22.00 and 280 VP, plus 1 Tcredits pak is $1.89 for 102 VP. This equals $52.80 for 1582 VP. Then you also get 101 VP when you use the VP at the auction.
The Very VIP offers two packages as a standing order. Professional Hosting Pk for $29.95/mo plus 900 VP added to a 50 Tcredit pak for $19.50 and 694 VP = $49.45 and 1594 VP. This is great if you have a web site already.
The Very VP International Seller's Hosting package is $39.95 for 1500 VP and is a great way to set up your own SFI designed website.
As you can see, there are many different configurations for an SO. Be sure that you set up your combination so that they come out of SFI on the same day to insure the best way to get credit for an SO.

What is the most important benefit, besides money, you have gained from being in SFI?

I've learned that SFI is an ethical company that is making it possible for people without many resources make a difference in their life and possibly their country and eventually the world. I am a part of something that is not only thinking big, but is big in its heart, in its interest in people and in helping the world be a better place for everyone.
Beside making some money, I have made contact with so many people that I otherwise would not have had the opportunity to meet. I have found that no matter what the country we live in, the religion we have, the world is full of great people who want and need the same things that I do. SFI provides leadership, training and information. If we are willing to grasp and work with the information SFI has developed we can all achieve our goals.
I've learned so much about leadership, internet marketing, friendship and the world, that the money is only the icing on a very big cake.

What is your experience or your opinion about running contests (and providing prizes) to motivate your PSAs?

My sponsor runs contests for new PSA's every month, and I've won several. I have put up contests for advertising asking them to send me the name and date of where advertising. This was marginally successful even though I sent them a list of free places they could advertise in my newsletter that week. I ran it for a month, and I had substantial prizes. The first time I did this, I got some results, but when I ran it again, I didn't get any.
I have also had contests for ordering from TC, they send me the receipt for the order. This has been successful, and the prize was a $2.00 gift certificate. I get a good response from this contest every time I run it.
I also reward them for reaching EA the first time with a $2.00 gift certificate, and a $5.00 GC when they reach EA2. This has worked for me and has increased my PSA's efforts to reach EA2.
