Usually in a small town, shopowners are very friendly and helpful. In Warwick, Queensland, for example, I went to the town’s shopping centre and saw a shop selling paraphernalia of different football codes, as well as imported clothings, Manchester and other unique items. The shopowner was very friendly and I learned they also sell stuff on EBay, and showed me a parcel ready to be sent out.

It was a nice opening and I asked if she would like to look at my ECA brochure and check it out. I followed it up later with an email. I will send another email, just in case.

I also pinned ECA brochures along with WAVE3 card on noticeboards of shopping centres we happened to stop in. I left ECA brochures and WAVE3 card at motels when we have to pass the night.

Then I remembered the business card from a nice shopowner in Manila where I bought some souvenirs from earlier in the year. Another ECA brochure was sent out with a Christmas card and a friendly note.

I have yet to see the result of my hard work, but when it comes I’m sure the feeling would be wonderful!

Hence, first and foremost to have an idea of what businesses you can send the ECA postcards to, you should use your ECA gateway(e.g www.tripleclicks.com/x/ECA, where x=your tripleclicks ID#) as if you want to register as an ECA and then go to the section where you will find those products and services that SFI/Tripleclicks permit and those that SFI/Tripleclicks do not permit.

Many will tell you to start in your own hometown, I think this is the wrong way to go about exploring ECA prospecting. Hometown prospecting is the right idea but throw that "smaller" thinking on a larger scale... Grab a phone book; put together a list of smaller towns, starting with ones within your region/county. From there do a little bit of research into the businesses these town already possess. I would categorize into two separate types:
(1) Towns that have larger scale departments stores
(2) Towns too small to have department stores

Reason being is your pitch to the business(es) located in an area without a department store do not have large competition so you will be approaching the owners differently. Simply makes it easier to stay organized is all. Don't limit yourself to only one town, group them! Often smaller towns will have the same or similar franchises and not just Ma & Pop stores. Maybe see if a few of these businesses would be interested in doing this collectively. Small town way of thinking is to band together so who knows, it's just one more way to market your idea!

Now, as for the "type" of business to approach the answer is simple

-Do they sell a common product that people buy? ie. necessities, toiletries, etc. (Staying away from the obvious, you wouldn't list a common grocery item as it is not practical)
-Can you ship it at a reasonable price?
-Has the TC market been flooded with product X already?


If you can answer Yes, Yes, and No then this is the perfect business to approach and approaching them with a game plan of including a cluster of other shops throughout surrounding areas will not only make them feel more at ease (not being "targeted") but also would put a little bit of pressure on them (if they don't jump on this opportunity someone else might, they could have had these potential sales and lost out.)

When one is wanting to recruit ECAs the possibilities are endless, as long as you are willing to not give up! Different people buy different things everyday, EVERY business is a lead, so follow it!

Functional products, like tools or furniture? Then ask yourself, are these products something I would buy online? Would you go back to this merchant to buy again? If you answered yes, then they are a good prospect. If they currently do business on EBAY then they would be an excellent prospect.

Take a 3 x 5 index card or a notebook in the store with you and take notes as to what kind of products they have available. This will help you later when you are preparing your postcards for sending.

Small to medium sized businesses will be easier to approach as their structure is simpler and selling items in vogue means their chances of quick sales are higher thereby serving as motivation to them.
